Entre los artistas confirmados para presentarse en vivo durante la gala se encuentra la exitosa agrupación australiana 5 Seconds of Summer, junto a Ricky Martin, Jason Derulo, Imagine Dragons, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan, John Legend y OneRepublic.

Además, Jennifer Lopez y Pitbull entonarán juntos el himno del Mundial Brasil 2014, “We Are One (Ole Ola)”. Ya en solitario, J-LO presentará el sencillo “First Love”, adelanto de su nuevo material titulado AKA, el cual saldrá a la venta el 17 de junio.

Como otro de los puntos principales de la velada, Miranda Lambert y Carrie Underwood, dos de las máximas referentes de la música country se presentarán juntas para estrenar su nuevo dueto “Somethin’ Bad”, canción incluida en el nuevo trabajo de Lambert, Platinum, el cual estará a la venta el 3 de junio.

Esta premiación se organiza sobre tres ejes: los Artists Awards, los Album Awards, y los Song Awards. Algunos de los nominados de este año son Lorde (12 nominaciones), Imagine Dragons (12 nominaciones), Justin Timberlake (11 postulaciones), Katy Perry (10 postulaciones), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (8 nominaciones), Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Daft Punk, Eminem, Robin Thicke y One Direction (quienes en junio estarán con su film This is Us por la pantalla de TNT).

La música latinoamericana también tendrá representantes en los Billboard Music Awards, en categorías específicas. En el apartado de Top Latin Artist, aparecen Marc Anthony, Gerardo Ortiz, Jenni Rivera, Prince Royce y Romeo Santos, mientras que en el rubro Top Latin Album las postulaciones se las llevan Marc Anthony con el registro 3.0, Alejandro Fernández con su trabajo titulado Confidencias, Prince Royce con Soy el mismo, Romeo Santos con Formula: Vol. 2 y la desaparecida cantante mexicana Jenni Rivera con el álbum recopilatorio 1969 – Siempre: En vivo desde Monterrey: Parte 1. Finalmente, por el premio Top Latin Song compiten Marc Anthony con “Vivir mi vida”, Daddy Yankee con “Limbo”, Enrique Iglesias junto a Romeo Santos por “Loco”, Prince Royce con “Darte un beso” y Romeo Santos con su “Propuesta indecente”.

En esta misma gala, Jennifer Lopez recibirá el preciado Billboard Icon Award, reservado para los artistas que hayan realizado las mayores y más extensas contribuciones a la música popular. Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder y Prince ya recibieron esta distinción en años anteriores.
Por otra parte, Carrie Underwood, Ellie Goulding y OneRepublic son los tres finalistas para el Milestone Award, premiación que distingue a los artistas más innovadores que lograron un hito en los charts durante el último año. El ganador se determinará por el voto del público, a través del sitio Billboard.com/milestone.

Cabe destacar que el evento de 2013 fue el más visto de los últimos 12 años, con casi 10 millones de televidentes sólo en los EEUU. También alcanzó los 4.3 millones de Tweets. La gran ganadora fue Taylor Swift, que se alzó con 8 trofeos, en tanto que Gotye y Rihanna recibieron 4 premios cada uno. Prince fue distinguido con el Billboard Icon Award, mientras que Madonna obtuvo el Top Touring Artist.
